Why?
We were the only NGO focused on food waste combat and sustainability and wanted to bring awareness to children. The need came from the fact that the current state of our knowledge and connection to our natural resources are causing us to create a lot of waste and therefore impact the quality of our life. And the change can happen much more quickly with children and young people.
What?
As a part of this sustainability mission, I designed a series of playful yet meaningful workshops for children and young people building eco-awareness from the ground up. The program included 4 themed sessions (1 hour each) with each class, covering Climate Change, Food Waste, Waste Management and Hands-on Sustainability
How?
In this project I was also the instructional designer, content creator and a facilitator.
Knowing the needs already, I began my scoping document by mapping these needs and competencies desired for this mini program.
One of the desired competencies was to make the children feel and connect with their emotions, as this is one of the experiential learning theories.
The other competency was to acquire a minimum level of practices that they could implement quickly. Easy to understand and fast to implement.
I used the ADDIE instructional design methodology and experiential learning design that included gamification as well.
Each session had its own theme and structure, meaning that it was with a presentation, practical activity, reflection and gamification (they could win prizes when they answered accurately to our questions).
At the end of the 4 series mini program, we would ask for their feedback, and their teachers would fill out a feedback form.
Lessons learned and impact
The impact of these workshops was for us as facilitators and for the participants as well. We learned how to engage children in educational activities and how important our mission is.
The lessons were that the practical activities and gamification play a big role in how the information is received in integrated.
I am very pleased with the result, and we continued to improve the content, delivering the program in schools and during the pandemic online as well.
