This was a special opportunity, as it was the first digital Romanian course on this topic. In order to have this course available my role was also to find the right content creator to work with.

I had the opportunity work with an NGO that was creating educational content on this topic in Romania and once we started to collaborate, it took about a year to finish.

Instructional Designer

Project management

My role in this project was Project Manager and Instructional Designer end to end. Once the content creator was identified, the first meeting was held regarding the timeline of  the project delivery and various phases, with all the necessary milestones.

The second meeting was about the scope of the project, target audience and the company’s requirements for the duration of the course.

Once the mode of work was established, the content creators started to write content and regular meetings were held to review the output produced by them to provide feedback and check against our timelines.

We used an online document to see the content produced in a real time format and provide feedback and once ready, we would transfer it to the internal eLearning platform of the company.

Sensitivity of the topic

We decided that due to the vastness of the information and children’s natural evolution regarding their body and sexuality, it was best to divide the course into 2: one for 13-16 and the other for 17-19.

Due to the evolution of the body and perception related to sexuality, we really took into consideration the importance of this topic and as well the appropriate language to use to foster a safe space for growth and awareness.

Learning theory

The ADDIE methodology was used to manage the project and the internal learning theory of the company: Engage, Learn, Practice and Master. 

The ELPM theory that belongs to the company adds a complexity and an order in the way that the content is created. In this sense each section brings its own way in which the content is written. It is similar to a KOLB model that requires meeting with the content at a theoretical level and then engage with it at a practical level, with reflections points in between.

This meant that for each chapter and subtopics of the course there were videos created and illustrations by the graphical designer, and where it was necessary there was copyright free library of images used. For each subtopic there were practical activities created suitable for different ages so that they are engaging, interactive as much as possible and easy to assimilate.

Interactivity and platform

Considering the sensitivity of the topic and the internal learning theory, the internal learning platform adds another layer of complexity to this project as it was a very clean type of adding content with a more minimal level of interactivity. 

Having this picture in mind, I tried to create activities that really were engaging and interactive through role plays, reflection points, quizzes and open questions that would engage the young mind in a debate of their own current perceptions.
